Making a Difference

As your state association, we strive to provide value and make a difference in your daily operations so that you have tangible outcomes for your precious membership dollars. Through the work of the board of directors and the staff of WEDA, the association will continue past activities but also take on some exciting efforts to make a local impact.

On May 17-19, the NDC and IEDC will host a course in Madison to help gain and retain the EDFP and CEcD certifications across Wisconsin. To make it affordable, WEDA, through the generous support of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, will provide scholarships to professionals participating in this training. If you would like to apply for the scholarship, please email

For those with the EDFP designation, WEDA was able to extend the deadline for receiving credits to allow this three-day course to be included as re-certification credits for Wisconsin EDFPs. I know that I plan to take full advantage of this extension and hone my financial skills.

Later in the year, we will launch a new program series focused on short-term training that your office, your co-workers, board members or municipal leaders can participate in to expand their knowledge of specific economic and community development activities and processes. This new service will be known as The Economic Development Academy. The goal is to break down the barriers for communities of all sizes to widen the knowledge base of people that are part of the development process at the local level.

As a WEDA member, you should know that your board is committed to advancing this profession and creating tools that will help you increase your success at the local level—making this a great time to be part of the WEDA team. I hope that you will engage in the development of these exciting efforts by volunteering for a Project Team with a defined commitment timeframe. We have opportunities for short or long-term efforts. Part of the challenge for WEDA, as we advance, will be to effectively spread the WEDA tools across the development community. Your participation in this effort builds goodwill and strengthens the organization's brand with local residents.

This is just the beginning of our planning efforts. The organization has an aggressive workplan and a board of directors with the leadership skills to implement it. For me, the greatest challenge will be to keep pace with the energy and passion of the board and to support where needed, but remove myself from as many efforts as possible to allow the momentum and power of the WEDA membership to shine through. It is WEDA's time to shine!
