Carol Karls

Carol Karls, 2013 WEDA President

WEDA is off to a rapid start in 2014, and our members have much to look forward to. And I personally am incredibly excited about what's planned for this year. There are three IEDC Courses scheduled (Economic Development Credit Analysis, Entrepreneurial & Small Business Development Strategies, Neighborhood Development Strategies), the final NDC course (The Art of Deal Structuring) and another Basic Economic Development Course. As a result of some phenomenal participation in these training courses, our state will have several new certified IEDCs and EDFPs to its credit. For those who have passed their exam already, congratulations! The WEDA board is very proud of its aggressive schedule to bring these courses to you, rather than having you travel to other states… or not even attend at all.

Embracing Our Identity

The Wisconsin Economic Development Association has done great work for the past 40 years. It's been a networking organization, an advocate, a provider of educational opportunities, a resource for up-to-date information about economic development and an agent of change. As an organization we have a lot to celebrate – so here's to us! The deeper we become involved and the wider we reach, it is apparent that we have somewhat of an identity crisis. To our members we are known. To non-members and those we hope to develop relationships with in the future, there is always an explanation: "No, we don't make loans.” "No, we're WEDA without the H. You're thinking of the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority.”

Legislative Update
Hamilton Group Consulting

As evidenced by Gov. Walker’s focus on jobs and the economy in his recent State of the State address, there is no better time than the present for WEDA to become extremely active as Wisconsin’s economic voice. The key to our success, however, requires engagement and involvement from the membership. That’s why it is important to participate in WEDA’s February 11thLegislative Day.

Office of Business Development
Regulatory Reform by Business for Business

The Office of Business Development (OBD) is part of the Wisconsin Department of Administration and was created in 2012 to give business a voice in guiding government reforms. Directors Joe Knilans and Nancy Mistele serve as the ‘concierge’ service for business, supporting business interests from within government. As advocates, they seek business input to guide common sense regulatory reforms, help resolve everyday problems you encounter when working with state agencies and can direct you to existing resources and support services that make it easier to do business in Wisconsin!

Best Practices: East Park Commerce Center
State’s Largest Certified Site

The East Park Commerce Center, a 760-acre site in Stevens Point, is Wisconsin’s largest certified site. The site is the twelfth site in the state to be designated a ‘Certified in Wisconsin’ development-ready site by Governor Scott Walker and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) since the Certified in Wisconsin program began in 2012. The site is an equal distance between Chicago and the Twin Cities with easy access to I-39 and U.S. Highway 10, and just minutes away from the Central Wisconsin Regional Airport and Stevens Point Municipal Airport.

State of Wisconsin Moves to Top 10 in CEcDs

At a high of 31, Wisconsin currently ranks 9th between Arizona (37 CEcDs) and Ohio (30 CEcDs).
